Ayana attended Northern Arizona University for her master’s degree and has experience in multicultural education, teaching English as a Second Language, and K-12 teacher preparation. Prior to joining the Global Education Office, she was an academic advisor for The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and an instructor for first-year seminar courses.
Education
- B.S. in Secondary Education - English with Minor in Japanese, Northern Arizona University
- M.Ed. in ESL & Bilingual Education, Northern Arizona University
International Experience
- Volunteer teaching assistant at Kokufu Elementary School in Japan
- Taught virtual English lessons with adult English language learners in China
- Assistant in an Intensive English course at Northern Arizona University for students from China
Why Ayana works in global education: There is so much personal, academic and professional growth that can happen when we expand our experiences and worldview. I get excited about supporting the accessibility of international opportunities for students!
Advice for students preparing to go abroad: Planning is important but, as the saying goes, "you can't plan for everything." An optimistic attitude about unplanned learning experiences you encounter outside of the classroom can really change the tone of your experience.
One of the most important lessons Ayana learned while studying abroad or traveling: If you tend to be self-conscious, embrace occasionally feeling awkward or out-of-place and give yourself a chance to be in the moment and have fun!
