Partnership & Exchange Programs

Before becoming an International Coordinator with the Global Education Office, Makkie worked in the Study Abroad Office at Purdue University, assisting past, current and future partnership and exchange students behind the scenes. During the pandemic, Makkie completed her master's degree with a concentration in Higher Education Administration. When not focused on international education or higher education, Makkie enjoys sketching, practicing martial arts and eating sushi.

• Summer study abroad program with IES to Tokyo, Japan
• Internship with IES-Tokyo as an on-site program assistant
• Traveled abroad to Seoul, South Korea and multiple regions within Japan including Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Nagoya, and Nara

Why Makkie works in global education: Global connections are becoming more and more popular in today’s world, and for good reason! Not only do these connections help with the exchange of valuable information but they also foster an appreciation of different cultures and ideas. I love helping students become excited and work toward discovering their own future global connections.

Advice for students preparing to go abroad: Understanding how to balance flexibility and planning can go a long way while studying abroad.

One of the most important lessons Makkie learned while studying abroad or traveling: Being open-minded and speaking to someone at least once can be extremely rewarding. You may be surprised about how much you have in common.
