Device and Information Security Abroad
Traveling abroad with mobile devices - whether smartphones, laptops, or tablets - can expose you to significant security risks. As a traveler, your devices may contain sensitive personal, academic, or professional information that could be targeted by hackers or cybercriminals. Securing your devices and data while traveling is crucial to preventing identity theft, data breaches, and loss of important information. This page provides essential tips and best practices for protecting your mobile devices before, during, and after your travels, ensuring you stay safe and secure while abroad.
Before You Leave
- Review RSP 214 (ASU’s Export Control Policy), as well as the recommendations here.
- Review and comply with ASU’s mobile security guidance at https://getprotected.asu.edu/policy-practices/telecommuting-mobile-and-travel-safety.
- Backup your devices.
- Update all software (OS, apps, etc.) on your mobile devices, laptops, and other electronics.
- Change your passwords, and enable two-factor authentication wherever possible on all devices.
- Encrypt your devices.
- Research and understand the security climate of your destination.
- Ensure you have access to any emergency contact information for your destination.
- For travel to security sensitive locations (e.g., China), consider obtaining a “clean” laptop and/or mobile device from your department (to minimize the mobile security risks). These loaners can then be wiped clean upon return.
While Traveling
- Be wary of public Wi-Fi and use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) when using public Wi-Fi.
- Avoid using public or untrusted charging stations (e.g., USB ports in airports).
- Disable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when not in use.
- Be cautious of phishing attempts and suspicious links or communications.
- Keep your devices secure and on you at all times.
- Use strong passwords and biometric security (think fingerprint, face recognition, etc.) for all of your devices.
- Avoid sharing your location or personal details on social media while traveling.
General Best Practices
- Set strong and unique passwords for each device and app.
- Regularly update software and apps to protect against vulnerabilities.
- Use secure cloud storage for backing up important files.
- Only install apps from trusted sources (official app stores).
- Turn on device tracking and remotely wipe capabilities in case of theft.
