Academic advising

Partnership and Exchange Programs

As part of your Global Education application, you are required to meet with an academic advisor in your major department, who will be responsible for signing your Academic Advising Form. Make sure that you meet with your primary academic advisor, as well as an advisor for any minor or certificate programs. You should use this time with your advisor to focus on the following points of discussion:

  • Review the DARS/Major Map and anticipated graduation date so that you are aware of any remaining degree requirements that may be completed abroad.
  • Find out if there are any other issues related to participation in a Global Education program that may impact your degree progress.
  • Discuss what criteria/specifications will be required by ASU to grant general studies credit (HU, SB, L, etc.) for any courses you may want to complete abroad.
  • Determine how many elective credit hours you have left to meet the minimum 120 required to graduate.  How many of those must be upper division?
  • Ask for advice on any degree requirements that might be easily fulfilled abroad (e.g. upper division electives, general studies, major, minor or certificate courses)
  • Find out if there are any ASU courses that you cannot receive credit for, even if you take a similar course abroad.

Faculty Directed Programs

Although Faculty Directed program participants are NOT required to meet with an academic advisor as part of the Global Education application, you are strongly encouraged to do so before committing to participate in your selected program. When you meet with an academic advisor, you should use this time to focus on the following points of discussion:

  • Review the DARS/Major Map and anticipated graduation date so that you are aware of any remaining degree requirements that may be completed abroad.  Can you complete any of those requirements on your Global Education program?
  • Determine how many elective credit hours you have left to meet the minimum 120 required to graduate.  How many of those must be upper division?  Will the program course(s) allow you to progress in these elective credit requirements?
  • Ask for advice on any degree requirements that might be easily fulfilled abroad (e.g. upper division electives, general studies, major, minor or certificate courses).
